Unlike cerium oxide, aluminum oxide (alumina) polishes by mechanical action only, Alumina particles are tough (fused or "alpha" type) and can be used to polish a variety of materials. Polishing alumina usually consists of "ultimate" particles. During the polishing cycle, the particles usually become imbedded into the polishing pad, exposing on the tips of the alumina to act upon the surface being polished. They generally do not break down during use.
